Olivia Rose (artist research)





Olivia Rose is one of the leading photographers at the moment who focuses on the unique and the original and tackles issues on classism, she uses subjects who are hot in the media due to their originality her work has been having a great impact on society today and her prints have contributed to the book 'This Is Grime' which focuses on a genre of music that has taken the uk by storm and has allowed the voice of a generation to emerge with Rose as the main photographer her work has inspired and influenced me to progress in my project. She also focuses on society's imperfections which is something id like to follow in my theme.





As you can see on the left this is a collage shot by Olivia Rose where she has included three different music icons and focused on their facial expressions to capture emotion, and if you notice how they are in casual clothing like tracksuits which isn't what you'd expect a celebrity to wear.










The first step to recreating Rose's work was to select some photos I had taken on a disposable, I then made a background for the images by simply colouring in some paper, once I had cut out the outline I then simply stuck down the cut out images to get the same affect that Rose got with her collage.












This was the end result of the collage I created and as you can see I have used two subjects that I photographed at a party and created almost a scenario within pre existing images, I enjoyed doing this but would not pursue this particular style in my final project. However I think I will be continuing to look at Olivia Rose.

The way in which I want to shoot my images is in a set of 6 portraits the reason for this is after reading bate's work on portraiture I feel this is the best way to get a full visual representation as bate's describes portraits as being an 'identity' that can be depicted through the photos. As you can I have chosen the artist 'Joel Knight' as research for modern portraiture, shot in a studio as in this weeks session we are experimenting we will be experimenting in the studio working with different lighting and seeing if I wanted to shoot my final images in a studio environment.  This portrait on the left by Joel Knights is a perfect example is what I'am trying to achieve in the studio in todays session as it has nice lighting that highlights the subjects face showing their key features. Portraits are said to be made up of 4 different aspects, such as: face, pose, clothing and location. you can use these different aspects to create a photo best suited to the subject. "portrait is a means employed to establish the identity of the sitter" Portraits are thought out to be shot at weddings birthdays and other various ceremonies however Bates argues that they are an 'art of description' which make up peoples social identity examples like passport photos that act as a legal identity. portraits are also a common form of advertisement when it comes to fashion, there are various different things that can be used to make up a trait such as : props, costumes and backgrounds, however it is the social identity that is the performance for the camera.
